King receives US secretary of defence

His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday received US Secretary of State James Mattis to discuss the strategic partnership between Jordan and the US, as well as regional issues.

The meeting, attended by His Royal Highness Prince Feisal bin Al Hussein, touched on military and defence cooperation between Jordan and the US, and the US support for the Kingdom in these areas.

Discussions also addressed current conditions in the Middle East, especially the Syrian crisis, the developments in Iraq, the latest developments related to the strategy of the fight against Daesh, the de-escalation zones in Syria, and the operations in Raqqa.

During the meeting, the two sides highlighted the relative stability witness in de-escalation zones in southern Syria so far.

The meeting also covered the repercussions of the Syrian refugee crisis, which constitutes an economic, social, and security challenge for Jordan.

Mattis stressed the US administration’s support for Jordan, noting its keenness to increase this support to assist the Kingdom in confronting challenges.

Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Lt. Gen. Mahmoud Freihat, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, Adviser to His Majesty and National Policies Council Rapporteur Abdullah Wreikat, and members of the accompanying US delegation attended the meeting.
