Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates agreed on Monday to provide a $2.5 billion economic aid package to Jordan, at the conclusion of a meeting held in Mecca to discuss the economic crisis in Jordan and ways to overcome it.

The package includes a deposit at the Central Bank of Jordan, guarantees for the World Bank in the interest of Jordan, annual support for the Jordanian government’s budget over the coming five years, and financing from development funds for development-related projects, according to a statement released at the end of the meeting.

The statement said the decision to provide support is “based on the fraternal and strong bonds among the four countries as well as the Arab and Islamic values and principles”.

His Majesty King Abdullah, accompanied by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein, attended the meeting, convened by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, with the participation of Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai.

King Abdullah thanked King Salman for holding the meeting, and Kuwait and the UAE for responding to this call, voicing appreciation to the three countries for providing this package of aid to Jordan in order to overcome the economic crisis, the statement said.

Speaking at the meeting, His Majesty thanked King Salman for convening it to support Jordan’s economy and for his ongoing commitment to standing by the Kingdom in all circumstances.

The King affirmed the brotherly, historical ties that Jordan shares with the participating countries, which have always been supportive of other Arab countries in their efforts to achieve prosperity for their peoples.

King Salman had called for the Mecca meeting after closely following the economic crisis in Jordan and out of his commitment to the security and stability of Arab countries.

Adviser to His Majesty and Director of the Office of His Majesty Manar Dabbas, Adviser to His Majesty for Economic Affairs Mohamad Al Ississ, and Jordan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ali Kayed attended the meeting on the Jordanian side.
